As a Sydneysider, and pre-New York, these buildings seemed really huge to me but what made it special was seeing the mix of old style buildings amongst more boring modern buildings. Architecture was never something I thought I'd be interested in, but somehow downtown LA got me looking at it more closely. I walked around with my LA mate and as a architecture nerd, he pretty much gave me a run down of all the cool buildings including The Eastern and The Bradbury (where the final 500 days of Summer scene was filmed). Because of their age and design, many are picked as movie backdrops for that vintage look and like all the cities I passed through, it had its own fair share of street art. Nightlife is definitely dead after sunset with Hollywood not too far off, but driving through these streets day or night was definitely kinda something. Lots of these buildings deserve restoration and if they did downtown LA would definitely become more of a spot on the map.
(PS, the bench was also in 500 Days of Summer - you know which bench!)
